When the days start to shorten, and the air takes on a crisp, cool feeling, we know that fall is coming. Though the ending of summer is bittersweet, there’s something about the cozy vibes that come along with autumn that makes us feel okay with the transition. We start to look forward to the upcoming holidays, covet sweaters and boots for the season, and get the itch to switch up our interiors to meet the feeling of fall.

We’re not huge on holiday decor, as much of it doesn’t feel intentional or high quality, but seasonal decor? That we can get behind. Here are our best tips for transitioning your interiors for fall.

Quick Tips for Transitioning Interiors for Fall

Layer up

Nothing says cozy like layers of blankets! Use multiple throw blankets on your furniture to add texture and warmth to you home, or pile up the pillows on your loveseat to add comfort and visual interest. While spring interiors call for clean, fresh environments, autumn gives you permission to add a bit of clutter, to go into that “nesting” state of mind in your home.

Opt for dried florals or other natural elements

Bouquets of flowers from your local farmer’s market are stunning, but they won’t last all season. For a truly autumnal arrangement, look for dried florals and grasses that can add a touch of “living” design while remaining true to the season. One of our other favorite tips is to head outside and find natural elements in your own yard or on a nightly walk that can add to your interiors. Idea #1: Collect acorns or dry fruit, add them to glass jars, and display them in your kitchen.

Add dimmers to your lights or invest in vintage candlesticks

The days are getting shorter and you can lean into the cozy feel of twilight by adding timed dimmers to some of your lighting. As the sun goes down, your rooms will be filled with a soft, moody light instead of full-strength wattage. Or, if you want to fully embrace the aesthetic, unscented candles burned in vintage candlesticks add the perfect ambiance.

Speaking of candles…

Fall scents are evocative of all of the best parts of the season: the fresh air, the spices used in seasonal baking, the smell of smoke coming from a bonfire. Choose candles that bring these memories to life for you in your home this season, and you’ll forget that it was summer just weeks ago.

When picking pumpkins, natural is better

Finally, there is a way to include pumpkins in your decor without going full “Halloween shop” - just go natural. Your local market, grocer, or even neighbor likely has small pumpkins, gourds, and squashes available. Group different varieties together for an eclectic look or go totally neutral by giving your picks a coat of paint. Interiors have such a way of helping us to slowly transition from one phase of life to the next. By making small shifts at home, you can help yourself let go of the worries of the previous season, and focus on the potential of the future. What changes are you making in your home to mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another?
