Sure, fall technically begins in September, but it’s when October hits that we really start to feel autumnal. We light candles, switch up our interior decor to be more cozy, and, best of all, we start to get the itch to make a seasonal statement on our porch.

Fall is the season of gathering, and, though that will look a little different in 2020, we think that’s the main reason why your porch becomes an important design element as the year starts to wrap up. It’s the first thing your loved ones see when they pull in the driveway, carrying their potluck dish to share inside, or, perhaps, your porch could become your socially distanced gathering spot if you’ve got the space. Either way, this time of year your porch serves as the entryway into your home, a first impression that can make anyone who encounters it feel welcome. It deserves a little fall love too!

4 Ways to Update Your Porch for Fall

Layer rugs

We said a great fall porch is all about creating a welcoming atmosphere, right? Layering textiles can do just that. Though you may have already invested in an indoor/outdoor rug for your summer porch decor, consider layering it with a neutral jute rug or something in a traditional fall color story. The layered look will add dimension to your porch and give it the homey, comforting look you crave.

Go all in with natural elements

Autumn porches wouldn’t be complete without dried grasses, mums, or even pumpkins and gourds - you pick your favorites! The great thing about these seasonal elements is that they come in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, so you can choose exactly what fits your home. Going for something traditional? Deep rust colored mums and orange pumpkins (maybe even some dried corn stalks if you’re feeling bold!) will add seasonal flair to your porch. For a more monochrome look, you can paint pumpkins and gourds to match the rest of your decor in just a few minutes.

Add dimmable lighting and lanterns

The days are getting shorter and shorter (say it ain’t so!), and mood lighting adds to the autumnal vibe. Utilize your dimmable porch lights this time of year, or pick up a few faux candles with timers that you can place in vintage candle holders or lanterns for a warm glow through the evening.

Choose a wreath

Finally, utilizing fall foliage to create your own wreath is one of the simplest ways to add a touch of the season to your front porch. We like the idea of gathering leaves, grasses, acorns, and even berries from local parks or your backyard and weaving them onto a wire frame for a sustainable decor piece that screams fall.

Fall is officially here, and we are ready for the crisp days and cozy nights ahead now that we’ve made some subtle adjustments to our porch decor. Which of these tips will you be trying out this season?
